Thoughts Expressed by Marguerite Bourgeoys

I have always remarked that the graces we receive are generally a return for our fidelity to the practice of charity.

We must live in such a way that we not only love our neighbor, but we make it easy for our neighbor to love us.

Let us recapture, at least among ourselves, the true spirit of cordiality and affection which was the glory of the first Christians.

It is always to humble and mortified souls that Our Lord is pleased to reveal himself. Only such souls are able to obtain heavenly blessings upon themselves and for others.

Let us begin and pursue all our actions in union with the Blessed Virgin; with her protection we have nothing to fear.

A time of sickness is a time of grace. It is then that we reap a harvest for eternity.

Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys

Marguerite Bourgeoys was born in Troyes, in the province of Champagne in France, on April 17, 1620. At the age of thirty-three she made the perilous trip across the Atlantic in order to initiate an apostolate of education in Ville Marie, now the city of Montreal.

Her pupils there were both Indian children and the children of the early French settlers. In Ville Marie she founded an Institute of uncloistered Sisters which was given the name, Congregation de Notre Dame, and whose members soon brought their teachings to many parts of the New World.

After 47 years of life dedicated to the service of God and her neighbor, Marguerite Bourgeoys died in Montreal on the 12th day of January in the year 1700. She was 80 years of age, and was already known as a person of eminent holiness.

Marguerite Bourgeoys was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 31, 1982.
